Places to Write

Writing is an individual creative process and different for everyone. Some writers need the quiet and private spaces of their offices to write while other's thrive on being out and about in the community and writing in coffee shops tends to be quite popular.

For myself, this process has changed over time. Once, I was quite content writing in the classroom instead of doing my math or English or science work. Then I could happily write at home in my room while watching TV. Then I became a in my room/office with total silence (except maybe classical music) person. But lately, home isn't my favourite place to write either and I've branched out. So these are just some of my favourite places, overall, to write.

1. Home at my desk

No matter what, this will always be my most comfortable place to write. In the same chair I've had since high school (it's seen a LOT of words) with my writing and book mementos (bookmarks, flyers, 'love' decorations and awards) surrounding me.

2. Home in bed

When it's late and I'm on a roll and want to get comfortable, I enjoy writing in the darkness propped up on pillows in my warm waterbed.

3. Alone in the park

Lately, this has become a favourite for me. In the winter months, it is beautiful outside (as airconditioning makes me cold) and Townsville has many beautiful parks that are quiet and relaxing to write in. I'll also be giving the dog park a try soon so that I can ensure my border collie Jacob gets some exercise at the same time.

4. At a quiet cafe

I recently enjoyed a nice session at Zaraffa's drinking tea, but I don't think this will be a regular spot for me as I hate paying $5 for tea! I can make my own tea and take it to the park.

5. The library

I don't know if it would be a 'favourite' place, as the library is freezing, the toilet facilities aren't good at my closest one, and libraries these days, at least in Townsville, seem to be a place to let your kids run around and scream. But at least my closest library - the bad toilet facility one - has a quiet room. But it is definitely a place to go with friends who can mind your stuff or somewhere to stop by and write for a very short while.
