Mum's Baby

Mum's full size portrait of Timmy. I tried to think of something else to paint for Christmas, but why did I bother when this was really what she wanted?

Timmy came into our lives in November 2005. For the first few years, he was treated more or less like a 'dog'. He even slept outside! But from age five, he started to become Mum's baby. He was the little one she'd turn to and seek comfort from. He'd be on her lap the moment she sat down and started sleeping in her bed. He was spoiled rotten and much loved by our family and all of our friends. He saved us from deadly brown snakes and always told us when there was a rat around. He was the best rat catcher, and even taught my border collie Jacob how to do it! Timmy was such a big part of all our lives right up to the day we sadly lost him in August 2020. He had developed liver lesions and he went to sleep peacefully with everyone he loved around him. That was when I decided I first needed to paint him and I signed up to Lauren Elizabeth Fine Art's Animal Masterclass.

I do believe this will the final painting of Timmy for a while, as we all now have a portrait to remember him by.

Cosy Timmy

I completed this mini portrait of Timmy for my mum in honour of his 15th birthday, which he didn't make. Timmy loved curling up in beds and was often found hiding among our pillows. One of my greatest memories will always be of Timmy sneaking into my bed early of a morning after Mum had headed off for work.

Coco the Chihuahua

Coco is the chihuahua I plan to include in my next novel, nicknamed Emerald Artists. Her mummy Freya is a painter who meets an animal artist who specialises in pet portraits. Needless to say, Jake will paint Coco in this book. So I needed to have something to inspire me to keep going before I get stuck into Freya and Jake's love story.

Reunited at Flat Top Hill

Reunited at Flat Top Hill captures the moment in my manuscript Reunited with the Millionaire when Mirabella and Lincoln hike to Flat Top Hill Lookout on Hamilton Island.

I have long since wished to create paintings related to my novels. At first, this wasn't what I had in mind for Reunited with the Millionaire, but I'm glad the idea came to me because I'm exceptionally proud of this painting.

Timmy Forever

I did it! A week after expressing the desire to paint Timmy, the painting is complete. Even though I still have a long way to go in honing my new craft, I felt it was important that I painted Timmy now, rather than in a few months. I really enjoyed painting him and I love that I was able to remember my long-time puppy in this way.

Timmy went to sleep on the 5th August 2020 after 14 long years of love.

Isabella's First Birthday

Day #11 Prompt with Lauren Elizabeth Fine Art's Artist Challenge. The task was to paint any pupcake. I wanted to also give painting a dog a go, so I drew inspiration from Isabella's first birthday party last month.

Isabella is my mum's maltese. I adore this painting and was pleased to create this piece for my mum. I seem to love painting for others more than I seem to enjoy painting for myself.

Coffee Date

Painted for my mum Julie and her husband Ian for Christmas 2019.

At first, I had no idea what to paint them. The paintings for my brother and grandparents came really easily, but I thought over this one for a very long time. Drawing on what I'd learned throughout the year, I still couldn't find inspiration.

I don't know how the idea came to me, but I chose to paint 'Coffee Date', symbolising mum and Ian's first date on Townsville's Strand overlooking Magnetic Island.

The Family Vases

Painted for my grandparents for Christmas 2019. It took a while to decide what to paint them, but I knew it had to symbolise something about the family. I considered a garden or trees, but then drew inspiration from the pot plant I'd painted at Wasted Paint earlier.

This painting symbolises my family, a vase for each of my grandmother's children and a flower for every grandchild.

Author

Art is a new love of mine. I love creating vibrant, visual pieces of art to brighten up my - and other peoples! - home. While I've always loved being creative with words and dance, I've never been a visual artist. But now, I'm so excited to be exploring this new hobby.

In early 2019, I attended a social paint and sip night in Townsville called Wasted Paint where we are instructed through the basics of a painting. I loved going there, learning new techniques, and seeing the many different paintings that are created by the one prompt. By the end of 2019, I honed everything I'd learned to create paintings for my family for Christmas. Sadly, Wasted Paint was cancelled during the pandemic of 2020.

It wasn't until August 2020 when I picked up a paintbrush again. When my little dog Timmy was diagnosed as terminal and we knew his days were numbered, I decided to do a painting for my mum. It helped me deal with my grief by painting my childhood puppy Timmy at the rainbow bridge where my other childhood dog Dillon was waiting for him. During this, I rediscovered my love for painting and set myself a new goal - to paint Timmy.

That's when I joined Lauren Elizabeth Fine Art's online Animal Art Masterclass. Now, my goal is to paint animals. I also hope to build my skills in landscapes to capture images from my books. And that's the story so far!

So this is just a little blog where I share the paintings I've created.
